Why The Admiral is worth watching

The Admiral (Admiral) is a 2008 Russian epic biopic about Alexander Kolchak, the Imperial Navy commander who became a leader of the White movement during the Russian Civil War.

St. Petersburg, 1910s. Admiral Alexander Kolchak is a national hero — polar explorer, naval commander, and devoted husband. When he meets Anna Timiryova, the wife of his friend, both are drawn into a passion that will survive war, revolution, and exile.

As the Romanov empire collapses, Kolchak commands the White forces in Siberia and is declared Supreme Ruler of Russia. Victory slips away, and the film follows his military fall alongside the personal cost borne by Anna and the families caught in civil war.

Andrei Kravchuk's blockbuster was one of the most expensive Russian films of its era — a romantic war epic about a controversial historical figure loved and hated in equal measure.
