The siege of Rochester Castle — King John vs the Magna Carta rebels
Ironclad is a 2011 medieval action film about the real siege of Rochester Castle in 1215. After King John breaks his word on the Magna Carta, rebel barons hold the fortress against his mercenary army. James Purefoy leads the defence, Paul Giamatti plays a vicious King John, and the film delivers brutal siege warfare with an ensemble of British character actors.
It is not subtle — but as a siege movie with Paul Giamatti screaming at catapults, it absolutely delivers.
Ironclad wears its influences openly: medieval warfare, Templar honour, and a villainous king played with full-throttle intensity by Paul Giamatti. Jonathan English focuses on the mechanics of siege — starvation, assault, betrayal — rather than courtly romance, and the film is stronger for that clarity.
James Purefoy makes a convincing anchor as Marshall, and the supporting cast of British veterans gives the fortress a lived-in feel. The violence is blunt and frequent; this is not sanitized fantasy Britain but mud, blood, and collapsing masonry.
If you liked Arn, Black Death, or Pilgrimage, Ironclad belongs in the same marathon — the one where medieval Europe is dangerous, political, and very physical.
Heavy metal goes medieval — Rochester Castle under siege, with the Magna Carta hanging in the balance.
Based on the 1215 siege of Rochester Castle after King John rejected the Magna Carta.
A scene-stealing turn — petty, violent, and unforgettable.
Catapults, tunnels, starvation, and keep fighting — the genre done with conviction.
Purefoy, Cox, Dance, Jacobi, and Flemyng give the film character-actor depth.
1215 — when a castle stood between tyranny and London

King John reneges on the charter and marches with mercenaries. Rochester Castle becomes the rebels' last meaningful barrier.

James Purefoy's Templar knight anchors the defence — methodical, devout, and lethal in close combat.

Giamatti plays John as a furious, vindictive ruler willing to destroy his own fortress to crush rebellion.
