John Wick
A retired killer buries his wife, then loses the puppy she left him. Chad Stahelski's 2014 film builds the Continental from a nightclub shootout and a red marker — short, lean, and the only chapter you must see first.
Open
Start with the four John Wick chapters in release order — 2014, 2017, 2019, 2023. That is the intended first marathon: a retired hitman is pulled back in, then the Continental, the High Table, and the whole assassin underworld open around him. Ballerina (2025) is a spin-off starring Ana de Armas. It was released after Chapter 4, but the story sits between Chapter 3 and Chapter 4. Watch it last if you want premiere order; watch it after Parabellum if you want story order.
John Wick Films in Release Order
John Wick: Chapter 2
A blood marker from Santino D'Antonio forces John back to Rome and the catacombs. This is where gold coins, the High Table, and the idea of 'excommunicado' become the rules of the series.
Open
John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum
Declared excommunicado, John runs from the New York Continental to Casablanca and the desert. Watch this before Ballerina if you want the spin-off's timeline; the Director and the Ruska Roma here are the same world Eve later inherits.
Open
John Wick: Chapter 4
The 2023 chapter takes John from Osaka to Berlin to a sunrise duel at Sacré-Cœur. It is written as the close of his main story — watch it after the first three, and after Ballerina only if you are following release dates rather than plot.
Open
Ballerina
Ana de Armas plays Eve Macarro, a Ruska Roma assassin hunting the people who killed her father. Released in June 2025, it takes place during Chapter 3. Keanu Reeves appears; it is a spin-off, not Chapter 5.
OpenFAQ
What is the best order to watch John Wick movies?
For a first watch: Chapter 1, 2, 3, then 4. Add Ballerina after Chapter 3 if you want story chronology, or after Chapter 4 if you want the order they reached theaters.
How many John Wick movies are there?
Four numbered chapters plus the 2025 spin-off Ballerina. A fifth chapter has been discussed; it is not released.
Does Ballerina spoil Chapter 4?
The film is set during Chapter 3, so it does not depend on Chapter 4's ending. Watching it after Parabellum is the cleanest story path.
Do I need Ballerina to understand Chapter 4?
No. Chapter 4 was finished and released two years earlier. Ballerina adds Eve's story and more Ruska Roma lore; it is optional for the main arc.
